Police: Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run; suspect arrested

Maui police have arrested a 42-year-old man from Wailuku after a 70-year-old man died in a hit-and-run Monday night in Kihei.

According to police, the 70-year-old man is from Maalaea. He was reportedly crossing East Lipoa Street at about 9:02 p.m. when he was hit by a red pickup truck headed east. Police say the pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed when the man was struck.

​​As a result of the collision, the man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the red pickup allegedly fled the scene without stopping to check on the pedestrian or render aid.

Shortly after the collision, a citizen reported a red 2023 Toyota Tacoma operating recklessly on Maui Veterans Highway, leaving the Kihei area. Officers found the vehicle and its driver, a 42-year-old Wailuku male, according to police.

The man from Wailuku was charged with negligent homicide in the first degree and collisions involving death.

He was taken to the Wailuku Police Station, where he remains in police custody.

Police are withholding the 70-year-old man’s name pending notification of his next of kin.
