Two rescued after being swept into ocean at La Perouse Bay

Two people were rescued Saturday afternoon after being swept off a rocky shoreline by large surf at the south end of La Perouse Bay in South Maui. Maui firefighters and ocean safety personnel responded at about 4:17 p.m. to the Hanamanioa Lighthouse area after receiving reports that two people had been swept into the water. A woman who suffered a head laceration was picked up from the water by an ocean safety jet ski and taken to shore, where she was turned over to emergency medical personnel. Police seek witnesses in assault investigation

Maui police are asking for the public's help as they investigate a second-degree assault case that occurred near 270 Waiehu Beach Road in Wailuku. According to police, an individual was arrested Wednesday in connection with the incident and later released pending further investigation. Police said officers initially responded to a report of an assault and conducted an investigation based on the information available at the time. County facilities to close temporarily for maintenance, testing

The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation has announced temporary closures at facilities in West Maui and Central Maui later this month. The basketball court at Napili Park will be closed from June 22 through July 3 for resurfacing work. The project includes cleaning the court, sealing cracks, resurfacing and restriping court lines. All other areas of the park will remain open, although visitors may experience intermittent construction noise.
