Hawaiian Council offers aid to households hosting storm victims

Hawaiian Council has launched a statewide program providing financial assistance to Hawaii households temporarily hosting residents displaced by recent storms, including Hurricanes Lala and Lowell. Eligible hosts can receive $500 per displaced person per month, up to $2,000 per household, as funding allows. Applicants do not need to be of Native Hawaiian descent. Hosts must be Hawaii residents providing housing to people whose primary residence was destroyed or significantly damaged in a confirmed disaster-impacted area. Entries open for Hawaii Scholastic Art Awards

Hawaii students in grades 7 through 12 can enter the 2026-27 Hawaii Regional Scholastic Art Awards through Dec. 12. Presented by Lexus Hawaii and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the contest is open to public, private, charter and homeschooled students. Ten students statewide will receive $200 awards, and one nationally recognized Gold or Silver Key winner will receive a Visionary Award consisting of a $4,000 scholarship and a $4,000 grant for the student’s school art program. King Kamehameha III School rebuild on Lahaina meeting agenda

Updates on efforts to rebuild King Kamehameha III Elementary School are on the agenda for the next Lahaina Community Meeting on Oct. 7. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Lahaina Intermediate School cafeteria. Other topics include upcoming work on the Lahaina Royal Complex restoration and information about the November general election, including how to update voter registration. AARP, Hawaii SHIP offer Medicare workshops

AARP Hawaii and the Hawaii State Health Insurance Assistance Program will offer free workshops to help Medicare beneficiaries review their health and prescription drug coverage for 2027. Medicare open enrollment runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, when beneficiaries can review and make changes to their coverage for the coming year. An in-person workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 22 at the Malcolm Center in Kihei.
