All Hawaii public schools and state Department of Education offices will be closed Monday, Aug. 17, as officials assess damage and other impacts from Hurricane Lala. Students should not report to their campuses. Only department employees supporting safety assessments and preparations for reopening should report to work sites. Approximately 7,000 Maui County customers remained without power as of 7 p.m. Sunday while Hawaiian Electric crews continued damage assessments and repairs following Tropical Storm Lala. Maui County Council committee meetings scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17, have been canceled, and county legislative offices will be closed as employees and residents deal with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Lala. The Water Authority, Social Services and Parks Committee was scheduled to meet at 10 a.m., followed by the Water and Infrastructure Committee at 1:30 p.m. The Office of the County Auditor, Office of the County Clerk and Office of Council Services also will be closed Monday.
