The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has launched a disaster assistance program that will provide more than $1 million in financial aid to eligible Native Hawaiian families impacted by the March kona low storms. Applications are open for the OHA March 2026 Kona Low General Disaster Assistance Program and will be administered by the Hawaiian Council. The Haleakala Visitor Center at 10,000 feet elevation will reopen at 8 a.m. May 21. The national park’s visitor center at the summit of Haleakala was closed for repairs and improvements to the building in February. The visitor’s center will reopen with temporary exhibits and store merchandise.

A woman from Haiku died Sunday from injuries sustained in a traffic collision May 10 on the Honoapiilani Highway in Kihei. According to Maui police, Teresa Campisi, 55, was driving a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta south on the highway at about 9:45 p.m. May 10. According to the preliminary investigation, Campisi was approaching the intersection with North Kihei Road when the Jetta drifted left across the grass median into oncoming traffic.
