Overview
The Central Maui crosstown rivalry arrives with both teams seeking their first MIL wins after losses in the opening weekend. Both will be looking to generate more offense — last week, the Sabers were limited to 113 yards of offense, while the Bears had 97. The Sabers swept the Bears in 2021.
Sabers at a glance
Maui High has been nothing less than impressive on defense, allowing just 24 yards and one first down in the first half last week at Lahainaluna and starting the year with a 16-0 win over Nanakuli. Junior LB Ofa Falekaono leads the way.
Bears at a glance
Baldwin is working its way into the season under new head coach Cody Nakamura, who was hired in May, and staff. State 100-meter champion Joseph Randolph will see the ball at receiver and running back.
Quotable
“We just hope to get better every single week and come back a little bit better next game. We played a little bit better than last week. We have got some guys trying to figure it out. We’re almost there.”
