Maui’s Eli Hanneman competes in the round of 16 at the Corona Saquarema Pro on Friday in Rio De Janeiro.

Hanneman and fellow Valley Isle surfer Imaikalani deVault, both fresh off qualifying for next year’s World Surf League Championship Tour, won their round-of-16 heats Friday.

Hanneman defeated Brazil’s Miguel Pupo 12.00-8.87 while deVault knocked out Argentina’s Nacho Gundesen 11.17-1.60.

Finals Day for the Challenger Series finale is scheduled for today.
