Lou Bouvet, of Haleakala Waldorf, and Zolten Poulsen, of Maui Prep, claimed the girls and boys titles at the MIL surfing finale on Saturday at Koki Beach.

The previous four contests determined the MIL team champions, while the final meet determined the individual surfing crowns. Each school could enter up to four boys and four girls in the individual competition.

Bouvet’s title was the first for the small Upcountry school. The senior easily advanced in her three preliminary heats before edging past Thaynne Colpas, of Maui Christian, and Chrislyn Simpson-Kane, of King Kekaulike, in the five-girl final.

“It’s fabulous (to win),” Bouvet said. “It’s great, feels awesome, I’m happy to represent my school, make my coach proud and my family proud. I had wonderful day.”

“I’m always so stoked to score some waves in Hana, it always does me good,” Bouvet added. “It was definitely challenging, in the beginning it was really challenging. When I first got here and looked at the waves, ‘I was like wow, I don’t even know how I’m going to get on a wave today’.”

Thayanne Colpas, a Maui Christian freshman, was second in the field of 26 surfers, while Chrislyn Simpson-Kane, the two-time defending champion from King Kekaulike, was third.

Simpson, a Na Alii junior, was gracious in defeat. “I’m so stoked for Lou, it was very well deserved,” Simpson-Kane said. “She was ripping all day.”

“The conditions were a little tricky today, the waves were all over the place,” Simpson-Kane added. “It was hard to find the right one.”

One surfer who had no problem negotiating the conditions was Poulsen. The Na Pueo sophomore had won the MIL meet at Koki Beach five weeks prior, and had won three of the four MIL meets before the individual championship. Two weeks ago, Poulsen won the Hawaii Surfing Association 14-15 state title on Oahu.

“Definitely one of the better days at Koki, and maybe like the best contest I’ve ever had here,” Poulsen said. “It was a little bit challenging for sure, Koki always is.”

The only time Poulsen trailed in any of his four heats was in the final with about four minutes left in his 20-minute heat. Angel Jardine, of Maui Christian, was leading him, 9.77-8.90.

“I had the one score (6.40) in the beginning,” Poulsen said. “Then I waited most of the heat. I got that last three-turner that ended up turning the end.”

The three-turn wave scored a 7.27, the highest score of the final. “Super psyched to win, glad I completed that wave,” Poulsen said. “All around, It was a great day.”

Jardine agreed with Poulsen on the quality of the waves.

“The waves were super fun,” Jardine said. “One of the best Koki contests I’ve done. I knew I needed only one big wave to win, but unfortunately it didn’t come to me.”
