A total of 1,600 Hawaii public school teachers were out of the classroom on Wednesday, with half calling in sick and the other half out for other reasons, interim Department of Education Superintendent Keith Hayashi said Wednesday afternoon. The Maui News The state Department of Health announced Wednesday that it is expanding eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended the shots for youth ages 12 and up. Foodland will close all 31 of its stores statewide on Sunday as a gesture of thanks to the company’s 3,000-plus employees who have worked tirelessly through the busy holiday season and the pandemic, the company announced Wednesday. Employees received the news earlier this week as a surprise. Typically, the only day that Foodland closes each year is on Christmas Day. All food, beverage and restaurant venues located inside a Foodland store will also be closed on Sunday. Stores will reopen at 6 a.m. Monday.
