Man serving one year for setting fire at Pioneer Mill yard
A Lahaina man is serving a one-year jail term for setting a fire that destroyed a portable toilet and damaged a trolley at the Pioneer Mill yard last year.
Miguel Zavala Sanchez, 37, also was placed on four years’ probation when he was sentenced Friday.
He had pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of third-degree arson for the July 15 fire. Three counts of second-degree criminal trespassing were dismissed in exchange for his plea.
According to documents filed in court, Zavala Sanchez was seen leaving the area of the fire before police arrived and was later seen in the crowd watching the fire. The property manager reported he had placed Zavala Sanchez under citizen’s arrest for trespassing twice within the previous 24 hours.
Police said Zavala Sanchez was holding a jacket with several burned areas on the inner liner. The burn marks hadn’t been there when Zavala Sanchez was arrested earlier in the day, police said. A lighter was found in Zavala Sanchez’s pocket, police said.
Zavala Sanchez was ordered to pay $2,062 in restitution.
Second Circuit Judge Richard Bissen imposed the sentence.
