PUKALANI — The Seabury Hall girls tennis team got a big confidence boost Friday at Kamehameha Schools Maui.

The Spartans beat the previously undefeated Warriors 4-1 in a battle of the top teams in the Maui Interscholastic League East Division.

Seabury (6-1) captured all three singles matches against the Warriors (6-1), as well as the No. 2 doubles match.

“I was really excited to win against Kamehameha just because last time we played them, we lost,” the Spartans’ Michelle Tasaki said after her 6-0, 6-0 win over Ariana Rios at No. 3 singles. “I think we can make it to playoffs this year which is really exciting for me because I’m a junior and the first two years I’ve been here, the girls team has never made it. But this year our team is really good and we got a lot of good incoming freshman so I’m really excited to see how we do in the playoffs and see how we do in MILs.”

The top four teams in the MIL — two from the East and two from the West — earn spots in the MIL team championship. If Seabury and Kamehameha finish tied atop the East standings, the Spartans would hold the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed by virtue of winning 6-4 in overall matches between the teams.

Nikki Fernando captured the first win of the day for Seabury, a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kaitlyn Ralar.

Spartans coach Jan Waechli said that Alexa deCrinis’ No. 2 singles victory was “a very big win” for the team. DeCrinis rallied to beat the Warriors’ Berylin Lau 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

“We need to win the next match against Kihei Charter, which we won last time, and then we are first in the division. That’s the goal of course,” Waechli said. “Now we are sitting very good to be first.”

The day ended with a close No. 2 doubles match, with the Spartans’ Elena Hickey and Linda Schmidt taking on Kamehameha’s Leeana Kanemitsu and Jayda Lum Lung. Hickey and Schmidt won the first set 6-4 and then battled for the second on a tiebreaker, 7-5.

The Spartans finish the regular season on Wednesday against Kihei Charter — their match on April 12 is already chalked up as a win because Lanai’s girls team has forfeited all of their matches this season due to an insufficient number of players — before heading into the MIL tournament.

Seniors Kayleen Lau and Kaelyn Kato, the defending MIL doubles champions, picked up the Warriors’ lone win, 6-4, 6-2 over Jessica Griffiths and Chiemi Powell at No. 1.

“Our lineup was strong but I think there was a piece missing. … I think we weren’t as high-energy as we were in the first half, so whether it be they’re getting tired or it’s school related or whatever, it’s just that we didn’t come in with that level of mental preparedness,” Kamehameha coach Kathy Kanemitsu said. “It’s a good reminder when you fall short, it reminds them what they actually want.”

The Seabury boys (6-1) swept their match against the Warriors (0-6-1) on Friday, 5-0.

The Spartans dropped just one game the entire day, with every singles match ending 6-0, 6-0 in favor of Seabury.

Miles Stone led the Spartans with a win over Jaxson Pahukula at No. 1 singles.

Like their female counterparts, the Seabury boys are in good position to make the playoffs.

“I worked on my return of serve today, so that worked out really well, and made sure my serve was consistent,” Stone said. “I think we’re pretty confident as a team, I know there’s some top competition coming up, but we think that we have a shot and we’ve been working hard. … I hope I’ll be ready.”
