Letter: Are voters going to return the country to normalcy?

The most consequential general election of our times is upon us. The choice between the two presidential candidates and the two parties couldn’t be any more stark. Are we going to hand the reign of our country to an immoral, self-serving Donald Trump and his billionaire oligarchs and his republican cult in Congress, or are we going to return the country to normalcy that had lasted previous 200-plus years before the arrival of Trump? Letter: Quit shipping our fish to other places in the world

Regarding recent news regarding the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture Plant Quarantine Branch and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources’ push to “Don’t Let it Loose” of non-native animals (coral, fish and other) into Hawaii’s ahupua’a, including reefs, perhaps our state should reciprocate this respect. While “Don’t Let it Loose” is an excellent message and program, the same consideration should be given to shipping our corals and fish to other states and countries. Maui has a major choice this election. Will we support candidates backed by big money and dark money like For a Better Tomorrow? Or will we support Ohana candidates? Many of us, and many more, are experiencing states and feelings that are expressions of anticipatory grief. Anticipatory grief arises when seeing what appears to be approaching includes the ending of what we love and care about. Or who we love and care about. Sometimes it hurts. This is not because we’re not spiritual enough; it’s because we are sensitive, deep feeling people who cannot help but feel and respond in some way to what is dying and broken in the world, to the dying of a loved one. Among the gifts given to men by women has been inspiration. But women give life to a people, and therefore should have a greater say in directing its destiny. When I was young, I read an interesting comment: “If mothers stopped raising soldiers, there would be no more wars.” Mothers, however, may permit their sons to follow their natural instincts or inclinations, but they certainly do not encourage a child’s thrill of make-believe killing. Letter: Disqualify candidates who run together

In 1988 Maui County eliminated political party participation in county elections so that individuals could run without political affiliation and focus on individual qualification. Both Maui Ohana and Hui O Maui are specifically political parties with specific agendas and vying for county council control. Presently, Maui Ohana has a majority. The specific case in both instances is both groups endorse and advertise these candidates as a block, encouraging people from all over the island to vote for them.
