Letter: After Ventura left office, he became Harvard fellow

When Jesse Ventura became Governor of Minnesota, he vowed that he could learn everything he needed to know in 30 days. Hubris, I’m sure, but he did it. However, Ventura did not run for reelection. After leaving office in 2003, he became a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The difference between can’t and don’t: Healthy people prefer bad news to being lied to. Ken Hill Lahaina

Climate change part of story of life on earth

Science tells us that climate change turned forest to grassland and forced our ancestors out of trees onto flat ground and then to walking upright. History is full of mass migrations of people because the climate changed. Ice ages and the time between ice ages change the distribution populations of plants and animals on earth. Climate change is part of the story of life on the earth. Jeff McCammack Wailuku

Letter: Appearing in answer to our soul’s appeal

Matthew 24 describes the signs of Christ Jesus’ return. These signs include false prophets, wars, earthquakes, persecutions, and lawlessness. This fundamental Christian belief is not unique. Esoteric Christians recite these words: “Let the group dedicate itself anew to the service of the Coming One and do all it can to prepare human minds and hearts for that event. We have no other life intention.” Predating Christianity, the Bhagavad-Gita, of Hindu tradition, states: “Whenever there is a withering of the law and an uprising of lawlessness on all sides, then I manifest ...

Letter: Who cares that our driver is demented and corrupt?

ABC news is guilty of election interference, and so are the countless liars who misrepresent public claims and documented points of view by those on the left who continue to lie just to get votes. The two moderators were completely biased. They only fact-checked Trump while Harris lied over and over. They allowed her to spew lies and did not check her once throughout the whole debate. Those of you who allow these lies to persist, and support such worthless officials, are the problem. Hypocrites and liars rule the world while preaching perfection. You people are the reason ...

Ignoring corruption in county for decades?

Maui County Council keeps paying out taxpayer money to a private law firm in Honolulu to defend the county from numerous documented allegations of corruption by a citizen resident whistleblower who worked for the county. They are authorizing now almost half a million dollars instead of working with the whistleblower, who is representing himself. He even got the county attorneys and a judge to recuse themselves for conflicts of interest. Even a former director of corporation counsel and county auditor are now being named as well as a well-known engineering firm. And the judge in ...

Letter: ABC special misrepresents facts about Maui, Lahaina

I watched the ABC special “Lahaina Rising.” I have no doubt about the connection between that show and the dramatic drop in Maui tourism since it aired the end of June. It clearly depicts tourists as unwelcome. The show inferred that anyone who identifies as a “local,” certainly anyone who is part of Lahaina Strong, is of Hawaiian ancestry. That is simply not true. Recent government statistics indicate only 6 percent of Hawaii residents actually have Native Hawaiian ancestry. Most others who identify as locals are descendants of the Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos who came ...
