Letter: Really lift West Side by restoring Lahaina pool

Lahaina Aquatic Center is a terrific community asset that deserves to be put back into operation. For years, it has provided an excellent facility for Lahaina and West Side residents for teaching swimming, youth USA swimming teams, high school swimming teams, lap swimmers, masters swimmers and recreational swimmers. The August 2023 fire did some damage to the LAC pool and building, but it is still standing. Right now, local residents are volunteering and cleaning up the fire residue, but will need assistance to finish the work of reopening the LAC. Mayor Richard Bissen and ...

Letter: God apparently chose not to save Lincoln

Some supposedly Christian Republicans, like Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump, seem to believe that God chose to save Trump from an assassin’s bullet. That belief is likely to inspire ex-President Trump to boast that it proves that he is now more important than Abraham Lincoln himself in that God apparently chose not to save Lincoln. Letter: Acceptance of differences what makes America great

While visiting the mainland, I was driving on a major interstate highway for miles up a steep grade. Surrounding vehicles were moving smoothly together at a relatively high speed. I witnessed four motorcyclists moving at 80 mph, staying in formation in the left lane to avoid freight trucks. A bright-blue Corvette was using its blinkers to swiftly change lanes. A jacked-up pick-up truck and a mini-van each displayed an “In God We Trust” license plate. A determined Subaru in mid-lane moved at legal speed as we all sped past without issue. A Sierra Club-bumper-stickered pickup was ...

Letter: Expired Car Registrations

I see so many expired car registrations and inspections when on the roads, some years out of date, it makes me wonder why the police don’t do anything about it when they see them. I guess those of us who keep up our registrations/inspections are suckers for doing so. The funds from car registrations go toward fixing our roads and you can see the results with the terrible condition our roads are in from so many people not contributing their share. How hard is it for the police to look at registration stickers when stopped at a traffic light and pull over those with expired tags? ...

Letter: Vehicle registration only a suggestion?

I realize I’ve reported this here before but I feel I need to say it again. As I walk and drive around Maui I see many, many vehicles with expired license plates, many of them long expired. I am beginning to feel that keeping vehicle registration current is only a suggestion and not really a requirement. We all know what a vehicle with expired registration likely includes, lack of insurance and perhaps unsafe condition. Just this morning on a walk up Ala Nui Ke Ali in Kihei there were 4 white vans parked near each other, all with long expired tags. These vans have been there for ...

Letter: We need to hear directly from our lawmakers

As the first anniversary approaches, we have many things to be thankful for. However, many things seem to have been pushed to the back of the list or have disappeared altogether. We need to bring back a weekly column on Lahaina’s progress. This needs to be reported by not only the press, but we need to hear directly from our lawmakers. Items that greatly concern me are the following: The bypass: If Mr. Sniffen will not address the bypass, we need to replace Mr. Sniffen. The West Maui Hospital: Secondary emergency exit plans for Lahainaluna and emergency shelter locations ...
