Pedestrian pilot project launched

The county Department of Public Works will launch a pilot project this week to increase driver awareness at various crosswalks.

The county will install signs stating “State Law Stop for Pedestrians within Crosswalk” at existing crosswalks on Kanaloa Avenue fronting the War Memorial Complex, and on South Kihei Road at the crosswalk north of Uwapo Road near the Kihei Canoe Club. The signs will be installed next week.

The pilot project is similar to the “gateway in-street treatments” that the state Department of Transportation installed earlier this year at crosswalks on Kaahumanu Avenue, Puunene Avenue, Kula Highway and Piilani Highway. However, the county’s project will not include the white plastic delineators between each travel lane on multi-lane approaches. Drivers have expressed frustration about the posts, saying they are distracting and difficult to avoid.
