Maui Waena wins $30K in ‘We Can’

Three Maui schools were successful in American Savings Bank’s 2019 Bank for Education KeikiCo Business Plan Competition, with winners announced late December.

By participating in KeikiCo, students learned the basics of creating their own business, including coming up with a unique product and service, developing marketing and finance plans and filming a pitch to investors, according to a news release.

Maui Waena Intermediate School’s “We Can” project took home first place in the middle-school division and won $25,000. The school also took home a people’s choice award and $5,000. This was achieved through public voting on video entries via Facebook in late November.

In the high school division, Maui High won $25,000 for its “AltruCliq” project.

Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina took home a county participation prize worth $10,000. This award went to a school in each county that had the highest participation rate.

More than 1,000 students participated in the contest, representing grades 3 to 12. Teachers and advisers were provided with a video curriculum, online resources and mentorship via American Savings Bank volunteers.

Starting at $4.62/week.
