Credit union breaks ground on branch

Board directors Glenn Okimoto (from left), Richelle Lu, Federico Asuncion and Chairman Edwin Okubo, Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino, CEO and President Gary Fukuroku and Board Directors Karen Oura, Robert Kawahara and Kirsten Szabo break ground on the credit union’s new headquarters and Wailuku branch at the Kehalani Village Center site on Wednesday.

Maui County Federal Credit Union broke ground Wednesday on the future site of its Wailuku branch and headquarters in Kehalani Village Center.

The new building, expected to be completed in mid-2022, will be more than double the size of its current Wailuku branch and main office and replace the Wili Pa Loop location.

When the credit union moved into its current location in 1998, it had about 6,000 members and nine employees, said Gary Fukuroku, president and CEO. Now there are more than 30 employees.

“This new building will enable us to be more efficient in serving our nearly 20,000 members, allow us to centralize our consumer loans and human resources personnel who are currently housed in a separate location, and position the organization for future growth,” Fukuroku said in a news release.

The credit union hired NewGround, a St. Louis-based architecture, design and project management firm, to design and build its new Wailuku branch and headquarters. The 26,183-square-foot location will include a drive-up ATM, safe deposit boxes and open-ended cash bars. When completed, the building will be able to accommodate up to 90 employees and have 130 parking stalls.

Starting at $4.62/week.
