Maui Sunday Market moves along
First photo: Surrounded by the scent of garlic and butter, Baldwin High School senior Dillon Baraoidan grills corn on the cob Sunday evening in the back of The Corn Project’s booth at the Maui Sunday Market. Located at the Kahului Shopping Center, the weekly event moved from the parking lot next to Burger King to the area in front of the 808 Gymnastics Center in May “to better accommodate vendors and attendees,” organizers said on Facebook.
Second photo: Chris Thrower, owner of The Corn Project, takes a blowtorch to a bowl of corn topped with mayo, cheddar cheese and bacon, also known as the “American.” Thrower said business has “been terrific. We got a lot of people that come out just to visit us here every week,” he said. “It’s a good time on Sunday night when nobody wants to cook.” He added that with island events like the Friday town parties still not back, the Sunday Market has been a great boost for vendors.
Third photo: With 4-month-old daughter Navea Garcia on her hip, Shayla Funes of Makawao and mother-in-law Jeanne Garcia peruse the selection at the KC Succulents booth on Sunday evening. “We’re plant people,” Funes said. “We came down only for this.” Owner Kathy Cummings said the business marked its one-year anniversary on Sunday.
