A 62-year-old bicyclist was killed after crashing into a truck in Olowalu on Tuesday morning, according to the Maui Police Department.

At about 8:21 a.m., the 62-year-old Lahaina man was riding an electric bike when he attempted to travel east across the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway and the Lahaina Bypass, according to a preliminary investigation. He was hit by a black 1999 Toyota Tacoma traveling southbound and was ejected onto the roadway.

The driver of the Toyota, a 28-year-old Lahaina woman, immediately stopped and remained on the scene, police said.

Life-saving measures were performed on the bicyclist, but he died of his injuries at the scene. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.

The investigation revealed that the Toyota driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and that the vehicle’s airbags did not deploy. Police said speed was not a factor in the crash, and the involvement of alcohol and drugs is pending toxicology results.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

This is Maui County’s sixth traffic fatality of 2023, compared to 11 at the same time last year.

Starting at $4.80/week.
