DOH confirms fifth cyclosporiasis case

The Hawaii Department of Health has confirmed the state’s fifth case of cyclosporiasis this year in a military member based in Hawaii who had traveled internationally and to another state reporting increased cases. Officials have not determined where the infection was acquired, but said the risk to the public in Hawaii remains low. The state’s 2026 total includes four confirmed cases and one probable case, with no known connection between the two most recent cases. Maui police launch impaired-driving campaign

Starting this week, the Maui Police Department has increased impaired-driving enforcement as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. The enforcement period will continue through Labor Day, Sept. 7. Police said motorists can expect a zero-tolerance approach to impaired driving as officers work to reduce crashes and encourage compliance with traffic laws. Lahaina wellness workshop set for Saturday

Lahaina Jodo Mission will host its second Detox & Wellness Workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at 12 Ala Moana St. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. The workshop will focus on stress recovery, relaxation, nervous-system regulation and traditional Chinese medicine. The program will include community acupuncture, a mini tea ceremony and seasonal wellness practices. Tuesday update: About 1,900 Maui County customers remain without power

About 1,900 Maui County customers remained without power Tuesday afternoon following Hurricane Lala, Hawaiian Electric reported. Crews were focusing on outages in Haiku and Peahi, along with smaller pockets in Upcountry, Kahului, Lahaina and East Maui. Six of nine transmission and subtransmission lines affected by the storm had been restored as of Aug. 18. Hawaiian Electric expects to restore service to 95% of affected customers statewide by Friday, except in remote or severely damaged areas of Hawaii Island. County offers green waste disposal after Lala

Maui residents cleaning up after Tropical Storm Lala may dispose of green waste at the Central Maui Landfill, 1 Pulehu Road in Puunene, or the Hawaii Organics Compost facility at Kuihelani and Honoapiilani highways in Waikapu. Green waste includes tree branches, leaves, grass clippings, brush, shrubs and other plant material from yards, landscaping or storm cleanup. The county also is offering 30-yard roll-off bins on a first-come, first-served basis. Properties must have enough room for trucks to deliver and retrieve the containers.
