Letter: Bikes are stolen. Return them now.

Our Sur-Ron dirt bikes were stolen Saturday or Sunday between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. from a locked shed at our burn lot in Lahaina while we were sleeping right there in the trailer. I told 12 people to come by today to view them. If you have any information, please let me know at (808) 870-2687. There are street cameras, but I don’t know how to access footage. Police? County? And there were footprints size about 10 shoes. Burglary is a felony, so feel free to return the bikes now. Kristen MarchelloLahaina

Letter: ‘Subtle energies’ behind health emergency today?

In December 1994, I came across an interesting book in an old, dusty, secondhand bookstore. It looked unusual, felt unusual, and the writing was obviously from a very high consciousness. The author was either Chinese or Tibetan. Reading it, one realized that the author was able to capture one’s breath and make one feel as if he were reading not only between the lines, but directly within the consciousness of the author. One page instructed the reader not to bring the small volume, written many years earlier, to the “bazaar,” indicating to me that the book was not for ...

Letter: Widely used Roundup probably carcinogenic

As recently reported in the New York Times, problems with a 25-year-old landmark paper on the safety of Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, have led to calls for the Environmental Protection Agency to reassess the widely used chemical. Bayer, which purchased Monsanto, the company that manufactures Roundup and had been active on Maui for years, has already settled $10 billion worth of settlements after it lost a case in court by a groundskeeper of a school who claimed his cancer was caused by Roundup, and was awarded $285 million. Thousands of plaintiffs, including farmers and ...

Letter: Congress must pass war powers resolution

President Donald Trump’s illegal acts of war against Venezuela are a clear violation of U.S. military, and international law. Every drone bombing of unknown boats, murders of unknown people on those boats, seizure of oil tankers, and now bombing of Caracas and kidnapping of a sovereign nation’s president and first lady have been equally illegal, not to mention outrageously immoral. The Trump administration has now unilaterally launched a regime change war against Venezuela as a first step toward hoped-for hegemony over the Western Hemisphere. (Remember the threats to Greenland, ...

Letter: Conveniently vilifying vacation-rental owners

I recently witnessed “rage bait” on social media, someone insinuating overhearing someone say, “Hawaiians don’t deserve to have a nice home, so we’re going to keep our recently inherited home.” Please stop vilifying. Why would anyone want to keep a home they are not going to enjoy from Hawaiians?  And here we are, people needing affordable housing in Hawaii, on Maui, are inflamed.  I own a Maui vacation rental. My 1989 permit to short-term rent is being revoked by the recent Bill 9, the county approved. I wished this solved the housing problem. But it ...
