Letter: Evolving potential our sole possession

There are three main theories of human evolution. There is the Darwinian theory, which addresses physical changes over long periods of time. There is the fundamental Christian theory which suggests that human evolution followed upon an initial creation by a personal God, who set the process of slow change in motion. There is an older view which implied that any such theory of development must include human will, human intention, destiny, inspiration and selfless sacrifice. In other words, one must not omit the most important element: Individual human consciousness. I am ...

Letter: Frequent purveyor of offensive misinformation

A tip of the hat to an editor in a specific regard. As he recently pointed out, information for years has noted much higher “difficulty” rates with full face snorkel masks than others. May future comments be as on point. One has to wonder if the same info applies to many similar types of masks. A question is why the first letter to run on Sept. 17 was one by frequent submitter of offensive misinformation nastily, even defamatorily, headed ‘Who cares that our driver is demented and corrupt?” Near-immediate neutral careful review by experts of the debate performance by Vice ...

Letter: Most unethical, self-serving conflicted county attorneys?

An ethics complaint, filed against the county auditor by a citizen whistleblower, exposes a persistent pattern of abuse by county attorneys with corporation counsel, at the expense of citizen taxpayers. County attorneys are supposed to protect the county residents, and mitigate liability against the county, right? In theory, yes. In practice, it is entirely the opposite. Over and over, they expose the county to greater liability defending bad actors. Moreover, those who are unfortunate enough to go to work for that department end up going to the dark side. The Maui County ...

Letter: World lost much in Kris Kristofferson

Not just Maui, but the world has lost a gentleman and a scholar. Kris Kristofferson was the definition of a renaissance person. Poet, scholar, teacher, soldier, musician, actor, performer, father, husband and friend to all who knew him. Although he was celebrated and achieved some of ...

Letter: Choose your leaders and messaging wisely

I recently moved to Las Vegas from Maui. As I established new local relationships, I often hear the kindhearted words, “Welcome to Las Vegas.” Imagine my shock when I conversed during my first visit with a Las Vegas hairstylist. She asked me how my day was going. I replied that it was hectic as I had just moved from Maui. Her reply: “Doesn’t Hawaii hate tourists?” I was stunned that Hawaii’s mixed messaging and declining aloha spirit had reached a mainland barber chair. Hawaii’s economic engine is tourism. Declining tourism brings island struggles and business ...

Letter: Hawaiian Air never had fatal accident or hull loss

So, the merger between Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines is now going to happen. As far as I’m concerned this is just rich guys doing Rich Guy stuff. Alaska is the much larger airline, so I’m sure they will be the dominant company. This is what alarms me. In my opinion, the ongoing issues with the Hawaiian call center in the Philippines are minor compared to Alaska’s known history of poor maintenance of their airplanes. Just Google Alaska Airlines Flight 261 and take a look at what the investigation revealed as the cause. More recently was the mid-air door plug ...
