Rainbow Wahine rally past Matadors for sixth straight win

Amy Atwell made five 3-pointers to finish with 17 points, and the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team earned its sixth win in a row by rallying past Cal State Northridge 70-66 on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Myrrah Joseph added 14 points and Julissa Tago scored 12 as the Rainbow Wahine improved to 14-10 overall, 8-3 in the Big West Conference.

UH trailed 40-29 at halftime and eventually fell behind 49-35 with 7:09 left in the third quarter. The Rainbow Wahine’s Nae Nae Calhoun made a 3-pointer to kick off a 14-1 run to end the quarter, closing within 50-49.

UH still trailed 59-53 with just under three minutes left in the game before a Joseph layup, Atwell 3 and Calhoun free throw tied it up at 59 with 1:37 remaining.

Atwell hit another 3 with 54 seconds to go to give Hawaii its first lead of the game. Deja Williams brought the Matadors within 62-61 after her 3-pointer was changed to a 2 after review, but UH was able to close it out from the free-throw line.

Williams led Cal State Northridge (9-14, 4-5) with 32 points. De’Jionae Calloway scored 20.

The Rainbow Wahine next host Big West leader UC Davis on Feb. 22.
