HONOLULU (AP) — Greg Bell and Jack Browning had first-half touchdown runs and the San Diego State defense made them stand up in a 17-10 victory over the University of Hawaii football team on Saturday night.

The nationally televised Mountain West Conference matchup marked UH’s first home game at its new on-campus stadium at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex without crowd capacity restrictions. With 6,239 enthusiastic fans in attendance, the Rainbow Warriors fell to 4-6, 1-4 in conference play.

Bell scored on a 5-yard run to give San Diego State (8-1, 4-1) a 7-0 lead with 6:27 left in the first quarter. Hawaii pulled even after Darius Muasau sacked Aztecs quarterback Lucas Johnson, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Isaiah Tufaga at the Aztecs’ 19-yard line. Chevan Cordeiro then hit Calvin Turner Jr. for the TD on first down to tie the game at 7.

The Aztecs took the lead for good on Browning’s 12-yard TD run, capping a 15-play, 82-yard drive with 9:43 left before halftime. Both teams managed only a field goal in the second half.

With 1:11 left in the game, UH got the ball back at its own 32-yard line. With help from an SDSU personal foul penalty, Cordeiro moved the Rainbow Warriors down the field before time ran out with UH reaching the Aztecs’ 18-yard line.

Johnson completed 12 of 16 passes for 99 yards and ran for 29 yards on nine carries for San Diego State, No. 24 in last week’s College Football Playoff rankings. Bell carried 24 times for 77 yards.

Cordeiro was 19-of-34 passing for 175 yards with one interception for the Warriors.

UH travels to Las Vegas to take on UNLV next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. HST.
