Makena church hosts Blessing of Animals The annual “Blessing of the Animals” ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 11 at Keawala‘i Congregational Church in Makena. Churches celebrate the blessing of animals in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. Readings, prayers and a blessing will be offered as well as pictures with Santa. Arrangements for the day will consider the needs of the various animals and includes dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, rabbits or any other pets. St. John’s Church will hold a Christmas Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 8992 Kula Highway. The event will feature new, vintage and gently used Christmas decorations and gifts. There also will be baked goods, takeaway food and drinks, crafts and live music. Santa will be on hand for photos for Christmas cards. Each child will get a small gift from Santa. COVID protocols such as wearing masks, social distancing and hand sanitizing will be followed. A maximum of 20 people at a time will be allowed inside the hall. King’s Cathedral in Kahului will hold Candy Lane 2021, a free drive-thru event, from 4 to 7 p.m. today. The event will feature a light tunnel, candy tents and online prize drawings. Candy Lane is open to the public. Social distancing will be monitored and facial masks will be used. King’s Cathedral Maui is located at 777 Maui Veterans Highway, next to Zippy’s in Kahului. Trinity Episcopal Church by the Sea will honor the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi at 9 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. John Tomoso will celebrate Holy Eucharist and offer pet blessings, according to an announcement. Live animals should be leashed or caged and treat bags and water will be provided. Photographs of pets unable to come to church will also be blessed, and children are also welcome to bring their favorite stuffed animal friend. Hongwanji churches to mark Peace Day Hongwanji churches on Maui will have Peace Day displays through September. They will also participate in the virtual “Ring Your Bell for Peace” event, sponsored by Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii, on Sept. 21. Maui United Buddhist Women’s Associations will be setting up displays to observe Peace Day and participate in the bell-ringing.
