Letter: Airport speed bumps could, should be fixed

I totally agree with the letter (week of Feb 13-19) concerning speed bumps at Kahului Airport. For those first-time tourists to Maui who rent a car, they have no clue as to how dangerous those speed bumps are. They can not only damage your car, but also hurt the people inside the vehicle. I know they are trying to slow traffic, but these are a bit on the ridiculous side. These speed bumps could and should be fixed. At the very least, signs warning “dangerous speed bump” should be posted before each one. Jane D. Jacobs Kihei

Letter: Can’t wait to tune in to Hawaii Reggae Network

Still listening in my old truck to cassettes from the 80s that I taped off KAOI, with Guy “Jammin’ Jamico” Amico. Classic shows well curated by a fine DJ that are timeless. And then he disappeared into the ether. So glad he’s back. Can’t wait to tune in to the Hawaii Reggae Network and feel the positive energy. Steve London Makawao

Letter: Corporations make it difficult to contact them

When you try and call the banks and especially insurance companies, they are closed on the weekends. Most people work, and can only call customer service on their lunch break. But the problem is you have to wait at least a half hour before you can talk to a representative; by that time, your lunch break is over. When you are finished work, they are closed. These corporations are making it difficult to get in contact with them. Many of the apps are busted and don’t work. Citi Bank is one of the few banks that have 24-hour customer service. Corporate greed is the problem. ...

Letter: Front St. Affordable Apartments will be rebuilt

Big mahalo to Hale Mahaolu, as they assume/incorporate this property as part of their continued good works in supporting the residents of Lahaina, both retired and employed families who qualify for assistance. Along with the request and assurance of buried utility lines, two entrance/exit passageways from this property and rehousing those who were previously displaced by the tragic fire event, we must yet honor our Historical District. There must not be allowances to building height. That is how it starts. It has been proposed to add a third level to Front St. Apts. This must not ...

Letter: Who is going to care for all the aging?

Currently there are 62 million people in America 65 years and older, or about 18 percent of the population. In the next five years, the population of people 65 years and older will be at a low estimate of 20 percent of the population. In Japan, almost 30 percent of the population currently are 65 years and older. For some reason, many young couples, especially Asian countries like Japan, Korea and China, have decided not to have children. In 2023, America’s birth rate was its all-time low, down three percent. For women in America between the ages of 20-24, the birth rate ...

Letter: President just can’t help being sociopathic bigot

There is so much criticism aimed at President Trump that it is disheartening. People just don’t seem to understand his cruelty and bigotry. Don’t they know that he can’t help himself in that, through no fault of his own, he is a sociopath (mental health disorder characterized by disregard for others, with tendencies to lie, break laws, act impulsively)? It is also quite possible that the heartbreak of lifelong, painful bone spurs affects him daily. Let’s show some compassion for a man who has none. Jim Killett Lahaina
