Riglos leads MIL contingent after Day 1 of state girls golf

Maui Interscholastic League individual champion Anessa Riglos of Baldwin High School fired a 10-over 82 and was tied for 17th place after the first round of the David Ishii/HHSAA girls golf state championships at Wailua Golf Course in Lihue.

Riglos, whose score was the best among MIL competitors, was 13 shots behind leader Raya Nakao of Punahou. Nakao was the lone golfer to shoot under par at 3-under 69, three shots better than second-place Chloe Jang of Roosevelt.

Maui Prep’s Tehya Chumley was one shot behind Riglos at 11-over 83. Chumley, Sacha Salem (84) and Sofia Mallari (86) have Na Pueo in sixth place in the team standings at 37-over 253. Kalani leads at 13-over 229.

The Bears were in seventh place at 50-over 266. In addition to Riglos, Baldwin’s team comprises Ava Kawahara (89) and Anica Ancheta (95). Kaylyn Fontanilla carded a 103 as a non-scorer.

Other MIL golfers include Maui High’s Kalia Kaneta (89), Jasmyn Yun (93), and Jacelyn Yun (101); and King Kekaulike’s Kylee Dee (96).

The final round is today. The boys championships are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, also at Wailua Golf Course.
